..camping on a Whim...

Our second night of free camping enroute to Broome, was at a really nice pub at Whim Creek....well it would be really nice if it hadn't been closed for what appears to be years.....    THere has been a pub here on and off since the 1890's...

Anyway, we had a peaceful night, we sat outside for a couple of beverages, on what would have been an overflow carpark for the pub.

Sitting quietly on the phone to my brother, I looked down and picked up...a 1920 penny from the gravel....I'm not entirely sure how a 105-year-old coin ends up on the surface of a gravel car park, in the middle of nowhere....but life is full of mysteries....

Speaking of mysteries, why in this remote area of Western Australia, is there a fast charger for electric vehicles.  You know the ones...the vehicles that are saving the world from the nastiness of petrol and diesel vehicles....why is this fast charger hooked up to an enormous diesel generator??

   Mysteries everywhere.........

Anyway, Bev and I mounted our diesel-powered beast and headed up the road toward 80-mile beach.  On the way we stopped off at Port Hedland, the largest tonnage port in Australia.  Iron ore is shipped from this port. In the short time we were there we saw two ships leave the port and one enter.

It is clear that these port towns exist for one reason only, servicing the ports and mining industry.

One ship after another, enters the port, loads iron ore, and takes a little bit more of Australia overseas...

Having taken in the highlights of Port Hedland we again took to the road.  There was a lot of road...

It is hard to describe distance up here, it in easy to drive 300 plus kilometers between stops, without encountering a significant town or landmark.

At the end of the day, we again stopped at a wayside parking bay, which are scattered periodically along the highway.

Again, w sit around the firepit, a refreshing beverage, and some quiet time...once the bloody bush flies went to wherever bush flies go at sunset.... and enjoy the peace and quiet.   As we were in a wayside stop, it wasn't surprising to have a road train pull in and share our stop.

We enjoyed another stunning sunset and settled in for another restful night on the road....

Today we drove towards Broome...in the 380 odd kilometers from our campsite to Broome, we saw 1 roadhouse...not a town, not a community, not and "area"... just 1 miserable roadhouse....distance means nothing up here..... speaking of which, we have already passed the 10,00 km mark since we left home....

So, I guess, as we are at Broome, we at this point, must be officially "on our way home"
