Bev and Trev head east.....

Image
Like all good things, our journey is rapidly coming to an end.  We made good time from Coober Pedy, there was very little traffic going our way, and the weather was conducive to driving....so we did.          We continued south east, stopping for lunch at Glendambo, before moving on.  We refueled at Port Augusta, we had intended stopping before Port augusta, but were unable to find a suitable spot.          So we ended up stopping just short of Port Germaine, while it was a bit noisy, we had driven enough.          The view wasn't too bad.... And the sunset was pretty good too......          Saturday morning, and we continued homeward.    We made good time agin, the weather was kind, and we made it to Bordertown, just in time for a fine mist to kick in.  (No sitting outside tonight)          We woke...

..Livin' next door to Alice.....

Well, camping next door to Alice.......               Once again a lot of screen time yesterday.   I'd like a dollar for every northbound caravan we saw, and I'd hate to be stuck behind some of them.               We paused briefly at the Barrow Creek Telegraph   Station, just long enough to take a pic.     A lot more of this........ ...........Alice Springs!     But eventually............           Passed through Alice Springs, pausing only long enough to get fuel and grab some lunch.   Nothing has changed since our last visit, so it was unnecessary to tour the place.  So it was a bit more of this......                   Before settling in at the Finke River rest area, an evening beside the fire was a change, as the eve...

Since leaving Kathering we have clocked up 860 km, over 2 days.   We stopped the first night at Newcastle Waters.  Not a fancy spot, just a wayside stop, with bins and toilets.....and 13 other caravans/campers and rooftops.               This morning we headed off towards Tennant Creek, which took us about 3 hours, arriving atr lunchtime.   We refueled the car, and grabbed a bite at the truckstop.  As there is not much to see in Tennant Creek, after our break hit the road once more.               About an hour out the road we had another break at the Devils Marbles, a remarkable natural formation.           ..Well it is central Australia.... Tonight we have camped at another roadside rest area,  not the greatest scenery, but  a few less campers sharing this spot tonight.  ...

...and so the journey south begins...

We have moved on fron Darwin, and made camp for 2 nights in Katherine.  Last night we caught up with Ken & Bev Lomas, friends from Hamilton.   It was good to see a familiar face (other than Bevs...) a few beers and a heap of fun.          Today we took a tour of Katherine Gorge,  one again the scenery did not disappoint.   there was the odd croc.... Some rock art.... yes...we both went...          Tomorrow morning, we will commence our journey south in earnest, we intend having 4 nights free camping between Katherine and Coober Pedy, days of around 400km.   Then we will see what the weather brings, and just make the best of what comes.          Not looking forward to the cold.....the weather has been amazing up here, we will have to do it again....

We have arrived into Darwin, and are staying at Howard Springs.   Over the past couple of days we have ventured into the city, had a wander around.               We had a stroll around the waterfront area, and took in some of the history of Darwin.   On the 19th of February 1942 Darwin, 242  Japanese aircraft, in two waves, attacked the town, shipsin the harbour, and allied airfields.                    As the result of these raids, the fuel stored in huge tanks at the port were destroyed, so it was decided to move the fuel storage underground.   To this end 11 storage tunnels were commissioned, but only 6 were completed.    They are extraordinary.                               The walls of the t...

While we were at Lake Argyle we took time to visit the Durack Homestead Museum.   The museum is housed in one of the homes once occupied by members of the Durack family.   This house was dismantled stone by stone and stored.   It was originall thought that the lake would take up to 5 years to fill.   Due to two exceptionally wet seasons the lake fill much faster than thought.    The story goes that the farm manager went to bed, and in the morning swung his feet out into a foot of water.          Because of this rapid filling much of the contents, personal belongings and machinery were lost to the water.          This house was rebuilt as faithfully as possible to original, and is a fascinating insight to how the Duracks lived.           After our restful time at Lake Argyle, we again hit the road, and headed toward Katherine...

...and so to Lake Argyle...

Wednesday saw us pull up stumps fron Kununurra, and take the relatively short drive to Lake Argyle.           In the scheme of our travels the 70 km to Lake Argyle is like a trip to the shops.....   As it is the start of the 'Tourist Season", sites are at a premium, and we we luck to get a non-powered site.   The Caravan park is at the northern end of Lake Argyle, it is a green and tropical park, apparently water isn't in short supply.     Once again the weather has been fabulous, 24 or 25 degrees, clear blue skies, and little or no breeze.   (now that  you Victorians are green with envy....)  we were treated to an amazing sunset and an equally amazing moonrise.                     Today we took a morning cruise on the lake, is is a remarkable place.  The lake has proven a real asset for the local wildli...
